Product DesignYou can design a product one way, and the result may be that your total cost of goods lands at about twenty bucks. Or, you can design a product which lands the cost of goods at $15. The product may look the same, it might function the same, and if done correctly, you can sell it for the same price. Of course, this is good for you because it leaves more money in your pocket. Now how does one go about doing this? It’s simple, first you look upon the process as an investment, not a cost. If you invest in your part design, your tooling, your assembly, and maybe even your packaging costs all come down. Design is a phase of the project that you only do one time, and you can divide that cost across every product that you sell. If you look upon the process as a nuisance that is just one step of the process that you need to check off your to-do list, you are going to miss opportunities and you are going to pay more for every step down the road. Design For ManufacturabilitySometimes we receive product designs that are really beautiful and creative designs… but they are not really made to be manufactured. Things like non uniform wall thicknesses, unnecessary undercuts, and inappropriate materials can add thousands to your molds costs… or worse, it can add pennies and dimes to your part costs. Mold MakingI tend to look at molds a little like a car. You can buy a car for a million bucks, or you can buy a car for $2,000 bucks. Both have four tires, and might be able to get you from point A to point B. But depending on the mission, that car may not be the right vehicle for the mission. The cheap car might work, but you know that you will have additional costs the more you drive it. And some mornings, it will just not be in the mood to run at all. It might get you from point A to point B, but it is going to take you longer to get there, and the journey is not going to be as comfortable. Molds are a lot like this. In general, you can make the same part in a $20,000 mold as you can a million dollar mold. So why would you pay for the million dollar mold? Because of your part costs. Obviously there are a lot of options between your cheap mold and your million dollar mold, but just like all the steps before this, your mold is an investment.
